TRADERS COVE

Design Objective

Located in beautiful Traders Cove, this home needed to be modernized and make the most of its gorgeous lake view. A central staircase and angled wall in the kitchen presented structural design challenges that, if dealt with, would add more and better-utilized space. The second phase focussed on completing an unfinished basement.

Project Overview

Walls surrounding a central staircase blocked the view of the lake from some of the areas on the main level. By replacing the existing floor-to-ceiling walls with wood posts and wooden handrails with metal spindles, the view was much more available. Additionally, an angled wall in the kitchen limited the storage options. Reconstructing and squaring off that corner of the kitchen, gained space that in turn allowed for more storage as well as a larger dining area to entertain friends and family. The space was updated, including a fun colour in the kitchen and clean finishes, but kept a subtle water theme. White oak floors replaced carpet, and live-edge wood countertops, timber accents on the mantel and coffee tables keep that natural feel. New furniture revitalized the living room. The master bathroom’s ensuite received a spa treatment by removing a tub and constructing an expansive walk-in shower that includes a quartz-topped bench and accent tiles on the plumbing wall – all of which works to emphasize the existing sunlight.

Phase 2 aimed to get more use out of an unfinished basement. We installed a wall of built-ins that incorporates bookshelves, space for a TV and its components, and a gas fireplace with a live-edge mantel and surrounded by ledgestone; it both anchors the space and provides warmth. To the side, a bar area that includes a sink and wine fridge and features a spectacular backsplash of porcelain tiles with a metallic finish allows for casual entertaining. Luxury vinyl tile flooring creates a softer feel and sound than typical tile flooring but retains its cool, clean look.
